The kiln I designed (VA Tech kiln and other similar names) is designed to dry oak (when the kiln is full) safely. Species that can dry faster will be ok or may dry too slowly and not be as white as possible (unless the kiln is not loaded to capacity). Drying rates are given in Drying Hardwood Lumber, page The common practice for drying green lumber to a usable state is to store it properly for approximately 1 year per inch of board thickness. Since I normally purchase boards in 4/4 dimensions, this means that I generally need to wait about one year before I can work with the wood.
